The EU AI Act (Regulation 2024/1689) is the world's first comprehensive legal framework for artificial intelligence. It establishes rules for AI systems based on their risk level, from minimal-risk applications like spam filters to high-risk systems used in hiring, credit scoring, and healthcare. It applies to any company that deploys or provides AI systems within the European Union, regardless of where the company is headquartered.
Any organization that develops, deploys, imports, or distributes AI systems in the EU market must comply. This includes SMEs using third-party AI tools like ChatGPT, AI-powered CRMs, recruitment screening tools, or automated decision-making systems. If your business operates in the EU and uses AI in any capacity, the regulation likely applies to you.
The EU AI Act entered into force on August 1, 2024, with a phased enforcement timeline. Prohibitions on unacceptable-risk AI systems applied from February 2, 2025. Requirements for general-purpose AI models apply from August 2025. The full set of obligations for high-risk AI systems applies from August 2, 2026. National authorities can begin issuing fines once the relevant deadlines pass.
